VASCO- Saligao United Sports Club edged out holders United Club of Telaulim by a solitary first half goal, headed in by Joston Dias, to enter the quarter-finals of 36th Bandodkar memorial football tournament at MPT grounds, here on Thursday.
Youthful Saligao United went on the attack from the word go and continued to dominate and play an attacking game throughout the regulation time.
United Club of Telaulim seemed to take the things lightly and did not play like champions of last year.
Taking advantage of the weakness of Telaulim, which consisted mostly of veterans, Saligao United forced the corner-kick which was shot by Terrence Fernandes towards the goal when an opportunistic Joston Dias jumped up to take the lead in the 15th minute.
Thereafter, Telaulim defense acted tough and did not allow further damage to happen. After the breather, goalkeeper Chandrakant Naik came to the rescue of his team by effecting superlative saves from the boots of Mahesh Rane and Clifton D’Souza, the Saligao forwards.
Referee Joao Pereira flashed yellow card to Berwin Teles of Telaulim for
dangerous play.
