Troubleshooting Computer Networks

Posted on 2009-05-11
The essential need of communication between two PCs and the seamless flow of transferring or sharing of data has called for networking in a big way. Computer networking has stepped across many sectors and has enabled its connectivity within the premises, at the inter-state and also globally. There are different types of networks – LAN (local area network) is used for short distances of one kilometre. This type of connection is done in buildings, homes etc. Then there is WAN (wide area network). This network connects geographically separated LAN’s and the distance covered could be more than 100 kilometres. MAN (metropolitan area network) spans more than LAN but less than WAN say a distance of 5-100 kms. It can connect towns and cities. While CAN (campus area network) is a network smaller than MAN but connects multiple LANs, explains Mr Rajesh Naik, placement officer, Jetking.
There are several positions that a beginner goes through once employed. Says Mr Girish Manjrekar, system administrator in Zedo, a Mumbai based company. In the very beginning a person is designated as trainee engineer, who monitors the system and should have the basic knowledge of the systems used. The fault analysed by the trainee engineer is then reported to the service engineer for further clarification into the matter. In certain cases if a service engineers are not able to sort out the matter then the details are sent to the technical support network engineers who takes up the problem through calls. The network administrator basically looks into maintaining network security and troubleshooting. The next position after this is analysing the services by the analyst and any change in services is then reported to the system administrator. At the top of the entire hierarchy is the chief information officer who administers, does the decision-making and allocation of duties to the staff under him.
“Scope is wide,” says Mr Naik as he continues, “In the world of today, communication and connection is the key, which ultimately calls for a network. Places like Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai are doing well in computer networking. However, now the placements are affected due to recession,”
To excel in this field one should be well acquainted with system programming, advanced knowledge of TCP/IP, security fundamentals, security implementation, router security and attack routes.
For a career in computer networking hard work and fast solution to problems is necessary, said Girish, a young boy in his twenties. Also knowledge in computers is essential. A diploma in electronics or rather the most preferred bachelors in engineering is needed to add to your knowledge of computers.
There is an exponential rapid growth in computers thereby increasing demands in companies like Samsung, Reliance, Wipro, D-Link, PCS technologies etc. “These companies are tied up with Jetking for placements,” said Mr Naik.
Entry-level salaries could range from Rs 4000-5000. Those interested and posses the fundamentals of computers can also enter in this field. However, recruiters prefer those that have completed any of the recognised courses. If you have the flair and the skills, go ahead and join the network of computers.
