PANAJI - The Home Minister, Mr Ravi Naik on Friday told the House that the police are keeping a close vigil on the Calangute-Candolim-Baga beach stretch and taking action against all criminals, irrespective of their political affiliations.
Replying to a Zero Hour mention by the Calangute MLA, Mr Agnelo Fernandes, the Home Minister informed that the police have recently apprehended two Nigerian nationals in the area for attacking some taxi drivers with a large-sized knife and arrested them under Section 151 of the CrPC. “One of the arrested persons was found without travelling documents,” he said, adding that the investigation is in progress.
Earlier, Mr Fernandes alleged that drug dealers are moving freely at Baga, and furthermore, the police are not allowed to enter into many places in Anjuna-Vagator areas. “One day Goans will find it difficult to move in this beach belt,” he predicted. The Home Minister charged the Calangute MLA of diverting the issue and assured the House that he will take action against every criminal in the state.
The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar, speaking on the occasion said that lot of prostitution was taking place in the North Goa beach belt areas while only 15 cases of flesh trade have been booked by the police, all over the state, last year. “The police are taking selective action against criminals in the Calangute belt,” he alleged.
