VASCO- Over 200 people, including women, demonstrated in front of the office of the deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate, Vasco on Saturday evening to protest against the transfer of two police officials alleging political interference.
The people have demanded with the government to revoke the transfer order immediately.
The two police officers — deputy superintendent of police, Vasco, Mr Deu Banaulikar and Vasco police inspector, Mr Harish Madkaikar,
were transferred following the visit of South Goa MP, Mr Francisco Sardinha to the madrassa and tendering of apology by Mr Banaulikar over the madrassa incident during the meeting held with the leaders of various Jamaats in Vasco.
“The state police under the guidance of senior police officials conducted the combing operations and hundreds of people including the migrants who did not have identity cards or those who had failed to submit the verification forms issued by the police, were detained under Section 41 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), but there was no any objection from any quarters,” the speakers said while addressing a public meeting here.
The speakers, however, raised the question as to why there was an objection over the picking up of the madrassa students.
“The Vasco police did not book the students under any Section and they were brought to the police station as the management of the madrass had failed in providing their antecedents within due date,” they said and further questioned the basis for transferring the police officers.
Mr Mahesh Navelkar, a key speaker at the meeting, expressed doubts on whether the police department would be able to take appropriate measures in future.
“The people of Vasco may have to resort to demonstrations in a democratic way in case the transfer orders of the police officers are not cancelled,” he observed.
Others, who spoke on the occasion were Mr Prakash Naik, Mr Rama Honnavarkar, Mr Ulhas Vichare and Mr Premanand Nanoskar. Among those who were present included former MMC councilor, Mr Anthony D’Souza, businessmen, Mr Rajan Bhosle, Mr Balu Salgaonkar, Mr Babal Gaonkar and others.
The people, thereafter, presented a memorandum to Mr Vishwas Satardekar, a lower division clerk, in absence of deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate, Mormugao.
The memorandum would be forwarded to the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, Home Minister, Mr Ravi Naik, Revenue Minister, Mr Jose Philip D’Souza, Mormugao MLA, Mr Milind Naik requesting them to revoke the transfer order of Mr Banaulikar and Mr Madkaikar.
