Mapusa- Dempo Sports Club had to struggle before cementing a 2-0 win over Goa United Sports Club in the GFA’s U-18 First Division League, played at Duler grounds, here on Friday.
With Dempo yet to face a defeat in the league, Goa United went into the match as underdogs but proved quite a threat to the dominating Dempo side.
However it was Dempo who had the first look at the rival goal in the 7th minute when winger Gurumayum Sharma crossed the ball to see striker Terence Fernandes header sail just inches over the horizontal bar.
Later Dempo had another scoring opportunity but Goa United’s impressive keeper Soma Korgaokar effected a brilliant save to thwart Royden Camelo from scoring.
In the 34th minute Goa United skipper Pedro Gonsalves could have turned the match totally into his side’s favour but the later shot straight into the Dempo keeper after receiving a long floater from Sagar Bathkande.
After the lemon break, Dempo coach Mathew D’Costa made two good substitutions in the form of Jovito Fernandes and Pandhari Chopdekar. Both the lads went on to score a goal each for Dempo.
In the 67th minute Pandhari’s cross from the right flank hit the post to see Jovito place the ball home on the rebound.
Later in the 70th minute Pandhari himself doubled Dempo’s lead with a impeccable finish from a deadly move involving playmaker Joyner Gonsalves who did the spadework.
Dempo continued to attack but Goa United keeper Soma was up to the mark with some quick reflexes to deny Dempo a big margin victory.
