Creativity filled the air as young children numbering almost 300 enthusiastically took part in the second all Goa spot painting contest organised by the Navhind Times Kids Club at Kala Academy on Thursday. Although the participant limit was fixed at 100, the over-enthusiasm of the children forced the organisers to stretch the participating limit to nearly 300 children.
There were 3 categories for the age groups 5 to 7 years, 8 to 10 years and 11 to 14 years as they each were given a theme to explore their artistic skills, the themes were Animal World, A River and the Fish Market respectively. The judges Mr Mahesh Vengurlekar, principal of Fine Art College, Mr Mohan Naik and Yolanda de Sousa renowned artists, had a tough time selecting the winners as they felt that all the children had performed magnificently and had performed excellently.
In the category of 5 to 7 years, Royston D’Costa bagged first place, Jonathan Vaz bagged 2nd place, Kenneth Rodrigues came third while the consolation prize went to Deepsee Salgaocar.
In the 8 to 10 years category, Gyles Ferrao won the first place, Deepika Giridhar bagged second place, Raksha Ladhani bagged third place while the consolation prize went to Zoya Shaikh Rebelo.
In the 11 to 14 years category, Gaurav Chatribin bagged first place, Mavis Rodrigues bagged second place, Twyla Ferrao bagged third place and the consolation went to Savni Panandikar.
Seeing their works Mr Mahesh Vengurlekar said: “Goa is well-known for natural artists.”
The children were emotional, as the judges decided the winners. They ran up and down the corridors of Kala Academy and some were so anxious that they tried to peek through the glass doors to see if the judges had chosen their drawings.
Yolanda de Sousa, one of the judges said that she admired the youngest category for their free and expressive work.Speaking to Mr Mohan Naik, one of the judges he said: “There was extraordinary talent in the children, they were expressive and free and was certain there were many who could consider Fine Arts as a career, he appreciated the works of the senior group of 11 to 14 years and was impressed with their artistic skills.”
The event was supported by Senor of the Suit People, Mr Samson Francis, Caro Centre, Margao, Mr Amit Kare, Golden Heart Emporium’s, Margao, Mr Walburg Coutinho, Faber Castell’s deputy general manager, Mr Sanjay Chari, Pastry Cottage’s Mr Sohan Karkal and Big 92.7 FM.
Present on the occasion was the executive director of Dempo Group of Companies, Ms Pallavi Dempo, publisher of ‘The Navhind Times,’ Mr Vilas Sardessai, general manager of ‘The Navhind Times,’ Mr Pramod Revankar, deputy general manager of ‘The Navhind Times,’ Mr Vijay Kalangutkar, editor of ‘The Navhind Times,’ Mr Arun Sinha and Dr Pandurang Phaldessai of Kala Academy, deputy general manager of Faber Castell, Mr Sanjay Chari and proprietor of Pastry Cottage, Mr Sohan Karkal.
