GIDC to set up common effluent treatment plants

PANAJI - The managing director of the Goa Industrial Develop-ment Corporation, Mr A V Palekar, on Tuesday informed that the GIDC has taken a decision to establish common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) in four industrial estates, including those at Verna, Kundaim and Pilerne.
“A related project feasibility report would be prepared for the same,” he added.
Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, Mr Palekar said that there exists a maximum number of industrial units in the Verna industrial estate, which consume large amount of water and produce effluents, and therefore, the first common effluent treatment plant could be set up at this industrial estate.
“However, establish-ing such plants in every industrial estate would not be viable as some of the industrial estates have only a couple of industrial units which use water, and in turn produce effluents,” he added.
Informing that some industrial units in the Verna industrial estate have their own water treatment plants, Mr Palekar said, “Unfortunately, not all of them work religiously to treat the effluents.”
Mr Palekar Admitted that there have been complaints from the general public about the effluents generated by the industrial units in the Verna industrial estate creating problems on the Cortalim side. Mr Palekar stated that the GIDC has already approached the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) for preparation of a project feasibility report for the CETPs.
The Nagpur-based institute is renowned for providing basic engineering packages for designing Common Effluent Treatment Plants at various places in the country.
Replying to a question, Mr Palekar said that though the GIDC would extend all support for setting up the CETPs in those industrial estates, which have high concentration of industrial units consuming large amount of water, the initiative needs to be taken by the associations of the respective industrial estates. “Such associations are affiliated to the Goa Small Industries Association and can seek the help of the GSIA, for the purpose,” he added.
