Look at the diverse group of successful musicians such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Beatles and you will see how they all portray a different image either in their music style, their looks, their act or their getting accustomed to the changing world of music while maintaining their own ‘unique’ image. Do you want to have your own image too? Then let your ideas flow and let your career kick off!
The music industry is a very competitive business due to the millions of musicians and bands throughout the world, trying to make it big. Band promotion is the key for succeeding in the music industry and it is often what makes or breaks a band.
Dedication is a key to success in the world of music. “If you really want to be a band musician then be like the pop singer Remo Fernandes who dedicates maximum time to his music,” says Jerry Noronha, a professional musician from the Crimson Tide.
Musicians can be pioneer or professional. Many professional musicians define the core of their musicianship as a state of ‘being married’ to music.
If you want to be one of the most popular musicians than remember these quotes by Jerry “You should have a keen interest in music. You must love the music. It is somewhat like a healing profession for a sick person. When you listen to music you should come out of the sorrow ultimately.”
A musician can be either inborn or have formal education in a conservatory or by a private instructor.
People love to hear different kinds of music for different events. Musicians play a variety of tunes as per the occasion. So it’s important that you should be very well versed in oldies, swing, jazz, 50’s 60’s, country, rock, pop music, hip hop, rap music and polka music.
The key element to succeed in the music industry is to carve a place in the hearts of music lovers either by performing free of cost or for a small fee.
Go step-by-step up the ladder of success. But remember success doesn’t come only by conducting live shows or by performing in the events. Its important that you should know how to write new songs, ways of launching and marketing your own CD’s, the tricks to promote it, designing a standout CD cover, creating eye catching posters, choosing a band manager etc.
Remember that there are many unexpected challenges that will arise throughout your music career. You will likely face music venues that have the power in deciding when you play and when you don’t play, band managers that forget to book certain events, CD launches that flop, band members who decide to leave at a vital point, internal band member conflicts, disagreements on the direction of the band, ups and downs in bookings, writers block when it comes to writing new songs, playing to small crowds, big crowds and many more.
If you stay focused on your goal then you will learn to deal with these challenges as just minor hiccups and move on to better and stronger things. You will likely have to work another job for money, at least until your music becomes a full time career. So the point here is ‘budget.’
Talking further Jerry says, “In Goa most band members work part time. As I am well experienced, I have taken it up full time. Today’s generation is totally attracted towards this and would like to make it as a career.”
Explaining the differences between orchestra and western band Jerry says, “In orchestras, the singer is not supposed to play the musical instrument but in bands the singer handles both singing as well as the musical instrument.”
Regarding salary Jerry said that the remuneration depends upon the show and the performance you give. There are government as well as private schools in Goa that train students in music.
So, if you are one of those who wants the attention of today’s GenX than a career in the world of music will most definitely be rocking!
