PANAJI- Double world u-8 girls champion and Dempo Goodwill brand ambassador Ivana Furtado bounced back with a win on Tuesday, after her hard fought defeat to Asian junior runner-up Woman International Master Padmini Rout, in the second round of Monginis 46th National ‘B’ chess championships at Damodar Saunsthan, Zambaulim.
Ivana, who is also a Woman Candidate Master (WCM) showed good attacking skills to notch up a win in round 2. Another Goan star Bhakti Kulkarni, a Woman Fide Master and Monginis Brand Ambassador with an ELO of 2166, demolished Ram Gupta (ELO 1943) of New Delhi from the black side of the French Defense in just 29 moves to register her second consecutive win of the championships.
World under-9 bronze medallist Anirudh Bhat (unrated) of Margao held DK Chopra (ELO 2007) of CRSB in a long endgame arising out of the Pirc Defence. The other bright star on the Goan horizon was none other than Asian U-11 Gold medallist Cyrus Perreira (ELO 1873) who held former U-18 world champion Ramaswamy Aarthie (ELO 2265) of Indian Airlines to a draw in 47 moves of a Queen’s Gambit Declined variation.
