MARGAO - Brazilian recruit Ivan Da Silva (Brasao) and Anil Kumar struck a brace each to guide Salgaocar SC to an imposing 4-0 win over defending champions Dempo SC in the Vodafone Goa Professional League football at Nehru stadium, Fatorda, here on Sunday. There was no score at the breather.
The Goan derby was tapering into a draw until substitute Anil Kumar fired the opening salvo in the 73rd minute and opened the floodgates for Brasao to log in two more goals in the 84th and 88th. Anil himself boosted the tally with the fourth goal in the injury time to seal Salgaocar’s victory in their maiden appearance in Goa League this season, while Dempo crashed to their second defeat in three outings.
Shedding away the disappointment of an early exit from Durand Cup, Salgaocar looked a determined lot, especially in the second half as their new-found enthusiasm was translated into goals and the subsequent 4-0 score line was impressive.
Coach Subhas Bhowmick disclosed that he was deliberately resorting to a defensive game plan in the first half where he had a 5-3-2 formation working in his team’s favour. However, Dempo felt bottled with their rivals tactics, although forwards Ranti Martins and Joaquim Abranches were trying their utmost to secure an early lead.
But with an early goal eluding Dempo, Salgaocar’s self-protective plan paid off as the slate remained clean at the halfway mark.
Salgaocar’s U-20 goalkeeper Macklas Moraes had also an important part to play in ensuring that Dempo were denied in the 28th minute when he parried to safety a scorching 30-yard free-kick from Brazilian medio Beto.
And, with Abranches too missing out on a good scoring chance, Salgaocar succeeded in executing a plan.
Bhowmick played his trade to perfection in the second half when he unleashed a more attacking 4-4-2 pattern to yield him quick goals late in the session.
A creative pass from Brasao off Beevan’s corner was smartly tapped in by Anil Kumar in the 73rd minute to leave U-20 goalkeeper Tyson Caiado with little to think about as Salgaocar went on to stun their famed opponents.
Soon, the pressure was being built on the Dempo citadel and in a bid to foil Brasao from advancing towards the goal, defender Valleriano Rebello tripped the Brazilian inside the box. And, the resultant spot-kick was tapped in smartly by Brasao to score his first GPL goal in the 84th minute.
The writing looked very much on the wall for Dempo as they had only six more minutes to conjure a plan, but in effect it proved too little as Salgaocar increased the score to 3-0 with Brasao once again scoring but this time off Jerose Oliveira in the 88th minute.
Anil Kumar swelled the tally in the injury minute after gaining a wall pass from Brasao to slot the ball into the far corner from the left end of the box.
